Uploading

There are 3 ways to send your images to us.

1. Using an FTP package. If you don't have an FTP program, you can download Core FTP or Panic Transmit for Mac for free. Please visit our downloads page for more information.

If you have already installed an FTP package, you can see how to enter your account information here.

If you already have your FTP software setup, see how to transfer your images here.

2. Using Windows XP - click here for instructions

3. Email them to support@bytestock.co.uk (There is a charge for this service - see below). Contact us first so we can tell you how to send them.

The confirmation email that you receive when registering will contain your FTP username and password. The username will be the one you used to register, with "bytestock_" before it.

Please bear in mind that you are only able to upload photos to your album once we have sent you an email saying that you are registered with us.

Image Checking

Once you have uploaded your images, they will be checked by our in-house team for the following:

  • Resolution and size
  • Keywords and meta data

We advise all photographers to amend their images prior to upload, to include the meta data, following the guidelines below.

What image size, format and resolution should I upload?

  • Bytestock only accept JPEG files as RGB images, not CMYK.
  • Digital cameras create JPEGs and these should be uploaded at a resolution of 300 dpi in 11” x 8” or 3300 pixels x 2400 pixels.
  • Scanned images can be uploaded as JPEGs at a resolution of 300 dpi in 11” x 8” or 3300 pixels x 2400 pixels.
  • Transparencies should be scanned by setting the image size to 200% and scan at 600dpi.
  • Images supplied in less than the above sizes will not be accepted.

Make the keywords count

The right word is worth a thousand images.

The more meta data detail you give about each image when you caption and keyword it, the greater the chance of your image being identified when a picture buyer makes a search.

If they can't find it, we can't sell it.

Please follow our tips so that the images you supply can be correctly catalogued.

  • Use both singulars and plurals
  • Captions must be descriptive and at least 5 words long
  • Describe everything in the picture (even the most obscure things)
  • There is no maximum keyword number - the more the better! Please use at least 20 if possible
  • You must use one or more of the following categories in your keywords e.g. House and Building, Car and Transport:
      • Abstract
      • Buildings
      • Business
      • Lifestyle
      • Natural World
      • Other
      • People
      • Sports
      • Transport
      • Travel
  • Use descriptive phrases as well as single words
  • Use a spell checker to correct any typing mistakes

Remember to complete the meta data Copyright field with the Photographer’s name.
